HISTORY OF ICELAND

KIRKJUFELL

One of the oldest written works from Iceland claims that the settlement of Iceland began in 874 AD. The first permanent settler was a Norwegian chieftain Ingólfr Arnarson. In the following years, many Scandinavian, mainly Norwegian, people emigrated to Iceland. For a long time, the island was under the supremacy of many other countries. The people of Iceland fought hard for their independence and finally reached it in 1918, forming a republic in 1944. Iceland is known for having one of the oldest parliaments in the world. It's called Althing and it was founded in 930.
In the past, Iceland was mostly dependant on agriculture and fishing. That changed in the 20th century. After World War II, it became one of the welthiest countries, focusing on finances, biotechnology and manufacturing.
Since its' big rise in the 20th century, Iceland has improved even more. It is said to be the 6th most developed country in the world, ranking high in categories such as democracy, equality and social stability.
Icelandic culture and traditions were heavily influenced by Scandinavian countries.

Kirkjufell is probably the most famous sightseeing places in all of Iceland. It's that one mountain you see on almost every single photo when you search for pictures of Iceland on Google. You honestly can't blame people for making this particular place so popular, it's beautiful! The mountain is about 463m tall and it's located near the town Grundarfjörður. The name "Kirkjufell" translates to "Church Mountain".  There are many lakes and waterfalls near the area and aurora borealis - northern lights can be seen around it at night. Tourists also love it because it was used as one of the filming locations for a famous HBO TV show Game of Thrones.
